When a loved one needs a little help getting around — but not a full-time wheelchair — a transport chair hits the sweet spot. Lighter and more compact than a standard wheelchair, it's designed for a caregiver to push: medical appointments, shopping trips, family outings, and travel.
At ABC Home Mobility in Pickering, we rent transport chairs to families across Durham Region — Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa — for exactly as long as you need one.
Let's explore the key benefits of renting a transport chair.
1. Lighter Than a Standard Wheelchair
The biggest advantage of a transport chair is its weight. Built with a lightweight frame and smaller wheels, it's noticeably easier for a caregiver to push, lift into a car, and maneuver through tight spaces — doctor's office hallways, store aisles, restaurant entrances. If you'll be doing the pushing, your arms and back will thank you.
2. Perfect for Appointments and Outings
Transport chairs shine on outings. A trip to Lakeridge Health or Ajax Pickering Hospital, a grandchild's recital, an afternoon at the Pickering Town Centre — a transport chair makes these outings comfortable for the passenger and manageable for the person pushing. It's the right tool for days out, not all-day everyday use.
3. Folds Small for Any Car
Transport chairs fold down to a slim profile that fits in virtually any car trunk — no disassembly, no struggle. Keep it in the car and it's there whenever you need it: the ultimate grab-and-go mobility solution for caregivers.
4. Comfortable for the Passenger
Don't let the lightweight design fool you — transport chairs are built for passenger comfort, with supportive seating and footrests for the ride. For elderly parents or anyone who tires easily when walking, it turns a daunting outing into an enjoyable one.
5. Ideal for Travel and Family Visits
Visiting relatives for the holidays? Traveling with an elderly parent? A rented transport chair solves the biggest travel worry — how will they get around? — for a fraction of what buying one costs. When the trip is over, just return it.
6. Affordable Short-Term Rental
Most people need a transport chair for days or weeks, not years. Renting a transport chair from ABC Home Mobility costs $45 per day, $55 for 3 days, $65 per week, or $85 per month — far less than buying a chair you'll rarely use.
